The Problem with Disturbia
In it's attempt to create a version of Alfred Hitchcock's brilliant film, "Rear Window," for adolescents, "Disturbia" loses it's momentum by not building suspense the way that a well-crafted movie of this genre should.
The main character, a teenage boy named Kale (Shia LaBeouf) has been deeply affected by a family tragedy. He cannot seem to focus on school, and in his negative state of mind, he punches his Spanish teacher, which lands him on house arrest. Like James Stuart in "Rear Window," Kale is then forced to stay indoors and has nothing better to do than to spy on his neighbors.
Kale soon sucks his best friend, Ronnie (Aaron Yoo), and the new (and of course sexy) neighbor girl, Ashley (Sarah Roemer), into his voyeurism. Together using cell phone cameras and digital media, they put together enough clues to suspect the mysterious man next door of serial killer behavior.
Of course, Kale's mom played by Carrie-Anne Moss (from the Matrix), quickly becomes attracted to the suspected killer, and both she and the police don't believe a word Kale says! Nothing too innovative there.
Without divulging the series of events that leads to this film's conclusion, I will just warn you that my biggest disappointment lies in this film's tiresome simple-mindedness by choosing to display violent scenes over what the masters of suspense know so well. The threat of violence is inherently more frightening and suspenseful than the act of violence itself. In one of the scariest movies of all time, "The Shining," Directed by Stanley Kubrick, there is only one brief act of violence. Almost every other scene in the entire film portends darkness but does not reveal it. Alfred Hitchcock does the same in almost all his movies.
My suggestion, watch "Rear Window" again and see for yourself.
