Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac, symbolized by the twins, Castor and Pollex, and its natural element is air. Gemini, the communicator, is all about words, numbers, writing, and science. Geminis like to use their minds to gather facts. Like the free-wheeling Bob Dylan, Geminis are very talkative and love to play with language.

bobsmall_237Watercolor by Philip GaligaGeminis are always moving, gathering, seeking, and experiencing just as Castor and Pollex are always moving back and forth between Olympus and Hades. Geminis are characteristic of the electrical impulses in the brain. They think so abstractly that often they go from tangent to tangent and even confuse themselves about what the original point was. Geminis tend to be voracious readers and talented poets and song writers.

Geminis are very mutable and can change environments and religions like they change their clothes. And, often, they have two distinctly different personalities. They also make very good mathematicians and scientists because of their gift for abstract thinking.

Because Geminis are so restless, they enjoy traveling and may take many adventurous trips in their lifetimes. Sometimes, they find it hard to sit still or truly connect with others because their mercurial minds are the ultimate in attention deficit.

When balanced, Gemini helps us to think and communicate to others through language. Geminis are often very reliable sources of information and can help us manage all the facts. It is not uncommon to find a classic Gemini reading the dictionary.

When unbalanced, Gemini can impel us to be trivial and superficial, thinking only of the facts with no connections or meaning. Then Gemini can be too separated from themselves and others and can become ungrounded with no backbone or consistent character.

When the sun is in Gemini, expect to feel the need to read and gather information. Depending on where Gemini is in your chart, you may either feel mentally stimulated or restless and superficial.

Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini. The placement of Mercury in the birth chart tells us about our mind, the way we think, and how we communicate. For example, someone with Mercury in Sagittarius would think and speak very philosophically about the meaning of life whereas someone with Mercury in Virgo would think and speak very practically about what needs to get done on the to-do list.
