Sagittarius 08 & Honest Self Expression Issue
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac, symbolized by the god Zeus (known to the Romans as Jupiter), and its natural element is fire. The energy of Sagittarius is expansive, like the word itself. Sagittarians are interested in the significance of everything. They seek to understand the “truth,” taking great journeys and cutting away all that is meaningless. Sagittarians strive to understand what life is all about and to provide answers to deeper philosophical questions. Like the little know-it-all Lisa Simpson, Sagittarians are often educated, scholarly, and wise.
Watercolor by Philip GaligaSagittarians tend to be intellectual, but they don’t always rely on facts to come to their conclusions. They love to read and to take classes in everything, but in the end, they often base their decisions on their highly intuitive capacity or what they sense is the truth. These mental qualities and high ideals compel Sagittarians to be educators of some sort or another. Higher education, journalism, and spiritual or religious study are areas that most attract a classic Sagittarian.
Sagittarians are optimistic, cheerful, and generous. They are straightforward and at times, completely honest, which can be difficult for some. They are very egalitarian and usually see everyone as equals. Sagittarians enjoy a good conversation, so much so, that they tend to exaggerate the facts to make a story more compelling or to prove their point. They are often quite skilled as speakers and writers. They also tend to be very strong physically and can be exceptionally athletic.
Sagittarians need a great deal of freedom and will not react well to restrictions that they perceive as overbearing or ineffective. Often at odds with authority, Sagittarians have a hard time with conventional figures that do not appear authentic to them. They also bravely leap before they look, which can leave them in situations that had they thought it through, they never would have engaged in.
When balanced, Sagittarius gives us an open mind and a spiritual desire to understand the cosmos and to know the “truth.” Sagittarius encourages us to learn, to be honest, and to bravely face reality, no matter how painful that might be.
When unbalanced, Sagittarius can impel us to be blunt and impatient and unknowingly hurt others with our speech and our actions. We then might forcefully express our ideas and opinions, not taking into account the level or the needs of our audience, and carelessly dismiss the people and the structure that gave us our foundation.
When the sun is in Sagittarius, expect to feel a need to honestly express yourself, to travel, and to learn. Depending on where Sagittarius is in your chart, you may either feel inspired intellectually and spiritually or become impatient with others and find yourself paying the price for a blunt “foot-in-mouth” comment.
Jupiter is the planetary ruler of Sagittarius. The placement of Jupiter in the birth chart tells us about our higher mind and the area of study that we are most interested in. Someone with Jupiter in Virgo might enjoy thinking about and studying health and healing, whereas someone with Jupiter in Pisces might enjoy thinking about and studying dreams and film.
