In Burma Chronicles Canadian-born cartoonist Guy Delisle graphically records the sights, sounds, and impressions of his year in Burma with his family. In this country notorious for its use of concealment and isolation as social control, Guy brings to life scenes of daylong power outages, heroin use in the outlaying areas, as well as moments of profound resilience of spirit. Guy finds that expatriate life ambles along while he takes care of his infant son and supports his wife, who is working with Doctors Without Borders.
Burma Chronicles, drawn with a minimalist style, is interspersed with vignettes of irony and humor without making light of the suffocating repression enforced by the military regime. This book with simultaneously inform and entertain. I could not put it down until the end. ![]()
