Vivian Kappel Takes Charge of Her Health by Becoming a Vegan and Joining the NHA in Florida

I feel better than ever at almost 85 years of age. I mow my own lawn, play golf twice a week, walk regularly, lift weights, and do sit ups, stretching, and other exercises. I also enjoy yoga, crocheting, traveling, reading, and crafts. I don’t feel as old as I am, but I didn’t always feel this good.

http://venusrisingmagazine.com/images/articles/vkappelbw2_101.jpgI lived in Matteson, Illinois, for 42 years. I was a ‘stay at home mom’ until my children were in high school. I then worked as a secretary in their high school for 14 years but retired at age 60 because of poor health.

My right arm became numb a lot especially at night and it would wake me up. To relieve the pain I would walk the floor until it was time to go to work. I went from doctor to doctor and read health books, but nothing seemed to help me. However, the one book that helped me tremendously was "Fit for Life" by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. I discovered the importance of a good diet. I became a vegetarian and then a vegan. I now feel good — better than I have ever felt. And, I am not taking any medications!

After my husband died in 1997 I was able to attend several ANHS [American Natural Hygiene Society] Conferences. I attended the 1997 Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, the 1998 and 1999 Conferences in Orlando, and the 2000 Conference in Miami. I have had the opportunity to hear some fantastic speakers through the years — Dr. Alec Burton, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, Dr. Jennifer Marano, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Jeff Novick, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Howard Lyman, Dr. Frank Sabatino, Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Scott, Dr. Ronald Cridland and many others.

I enjoy reading, and over the years I’ve had the chance to read some great books such as "The Pleasure Trap," "Eat To Live," "Mad Cowboy," and "Milk, the Deadly Poison." I also love to read Health Science magazine and look forward to its arrival.

In January of 2000, I moved to Sarasota, Florida, to be near my daughter Jane. My son, Bruce, lives in Tennessee. In addition to the National Health Association, I belong to the Sarasota Garden Club, the Newcomer’s Club, St. Andrew’s U.C.C. Church, the Red Hat Society, Gulf Coast Vegetarian Society and the North American Vegetarian Society.

Capricorn 08 - The Career Issue

How I Became a Production Coordinator for REM’s Latest Tour

nataliedrillings_150I work as a touring production coordinator for large-scale concerts. When I started out, I had no idea where I was heading in my career. I literally just walked down my own path. Ideas, actions, and big leaps of faith led me to the success I have today.

My father used to take me to concerts in New York City when I was a kid. His friend was a concert producer so we would watch the show from the sidelines and hang out backstage. (read more)

Sagittarius 08 & Honest Self Expression

Saying It Like It Is

kblume_lg_236“Kathryn Blume is Al Gore on crack. With red hair. And a uterus.”

I’ve been called a lot of things in my years as an actor and activist: A quirky Sarah Jessica Parker. A commie pinko. A hopium toker. Adorable.

You’ve got to figure with reactions like that, you must at least be getting someone’s attention. The paradox of doing politically-oriented theater, which also strives to be high quality art, is that you’re trying to get someone’s attention without looking like you are. You’re trying to encourage your audience to be mindful of a relevant issue by telling a story so good, they won’t be consciously aware that you’re trying to teach them something.

Scorpio 08 - The Money Issue

My Peace On Money

cdmoriarty_129In October we had one of the most tumultuous months on Wall Street ever recorded. We are in uncharted territory as far as investing and government involvement. I have repeatedly heard, “What can we do?” This is not the time to do anything drastic financially. Reviewing where your cash is held, investments are made, and how you spend money are steps you can focus on to find some peace of mind. Pay attention to what you are doing and focus on what you can change. More than ever, this is a time to get back to basics. Here is how.
