Gemini 09 - The Summer Reading Issue

Siddhartha

This summer I recommend revisiting an old classic, "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse. The story of a man who seeks truth, Siddhartha journeys through various ways of life before he finds it’s meaning.

Aries 09 - Spring Break

My Week on Retreat

Last month I took my spring break in silence. I spent a week on retreat at the Insight Meditation Society, or IMS, in Barre, Massachussetts. IMS has run silent vipassana meditation retreats for the last thirty years. People go there to rest, slow down, and to meditate with others in silence.

Relax and Be Here

As we move toward the end of long stretches of daylight and outdoor socializing, it's worth savoring the last days of summer. Since we do not control time, we cannot extend the seasons, but we can choose how we relate to what is happening. Each time we stop and take a slow, conscious breath, we become more present in the moment.

Strengthen Your Center With Half Moon Pose and Follow Your Heart With Wide-Angle Forward Bends

Without a strong center, we fall over. With a strong center we can reach out to have adventures and play in the world. It’s a fear of falling (both physically and mentally) that prevents us from taking the risks necessary to follow our deepest desires.

Frogs Stay Cool in the Summer

Swimming, bathing, or simply soaking in a river are wonderful summertime practices. Next time you go for a dip, try to feel all the sensations of the water against your skin and notice how your body temperature changes in response to the water. To prepare the body for swimming, practice Mandukasana, frog pose.

Breathe In Summer

The word yoga means "to yoke" or to unite. Yogic practices are designed to bring the varied aspects of ourselves into balance. Through these practices, we have the opportunity to move from feeling disconnected to feeling connected. When we no longer feel separate from our environment, each other, and within ourselves, we are in the state of yoga.

A New Beginning

When spring arrives, people tend to be outside more and to spend a little less time sleeping. Our energy increases as we receive more light and respond to the earth’s natural renewal. We might feel inspired to start a new activity, quit our jobs, or even fall in love.

The Practice of Being

Usually practiced as the very last pose of a yoga session, savasana marks the death of our practice and the transition into the rest of our life, allowing the birth of a new and fresh experience.

Stay Energized Through the Winter Months

Yoga is a helpful tool to uplift our bodies and minds and to remind us that our feeling of bondage or liberation depend on our attitude.

Capricorn 07

Surrender to the Snow

In Vermont, winter is not winter without snow. Snowstorms remind us that we are not in control. They force us to stop, take a breath, and wonder at the magic of nature.
